What is clinical research?

What are clinical studies (clinical trials) and why do we need them? What are the benefits and costs for participants? And what are objectives of these studies?

Clinical trials are primarily performed to investigate the efficacy, tolerability, and safety of innovative treatment methods. These new treatment methods are tested in human subjects and can include new medications and vaccines, or the application of an already available drug for new indications outside those for which it is currently approved.
The tests are tightly controlled, and subjects are closely monitored following a predetermined plan (study protocol). Through clinical trials, patients can gain access to innovative treatment options, and these studies ensure continued medical advancement and progress.
